Filed Under (13.Plywood) by Mason Pan on January-30-2010

One of my blog visitors told me that he wanted to know the Number of Plies of plywood of difference thickness . This is a common question. Hereby, I list the Number of Layers for plywood of each thickness .

Thickness
(mm)
No. of Plies of Commercial Plywood
2~3.2 3
3.6 3 or 5
4 5
5.2~6.5 5 or 7
9 7 or 9
12 9 or 11
15 11 or 13
18 13 or 15
21 15 or 17
24 17 or 19
27 19 or 21

The laws of No. of Plies:
1. If the thickness of plywood increase 3mm, the No. of Plies will increase 2 plies;

2. The plywood made of more plies is stronger than the plywood of same thickness but made of less plies. For example, 18mm plywood of 15 plies is stronger than 18mm plywood of 13 plies.
3. The plywood made of more plies is more expensive than the plywood of same thickness but made of less plies. For example, 6.5mm plywood of 7 plies is more expensive than 6.5mm plywood of 5 plies. Because if No. of Plies is more, more glue will be used and the labor costs will rise accordingly .

If the plywoods’ thickness are the same , usually plywood of more plies are of premium quality .

Good article. Just wanted to point out if you use the standard system is layer is exactly 1/8″. So it’s easy to tell if you have a 5/8ths piece if there are five layers.

Just wanted to add that :)

We are one of the oldest and used to be the second biggest importer from Thailand. We have started to import goods from U.S.A., Canada, Thailand, China, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania and Yugoslavia after 1980’s.

We have an inquiry for Plywood which is based on hardwood and tropical tree.

Please see below the requirements:
42MM THICKNESS, 1220MM. X 2440MM. (WITHOUT FILM)
Core: Pine, Birch, Poplar or Hardwood (combi+poplar)
F/B: okoume or tropical hardwood or core species
Plies: more than 17
Glue: Phenolic glue, E1, WBP
Product usage: furniture and door frames

If you can provide this, could you please give us your best F.O.B. price

We are waiting your response. We also want to know your suggestions of plywood that we will be using in indoor for the furniture usage. Any suggestions, please feel free to do so. Thanks.

Turkey is anti-dumping Chinese plywood now . So you will pay high tax if you import Chinese plywood.
