Plywood Grade (1-1) – US Plywood Standard (APA PS1-95 Construction and Industrial Plywood)

APA-The Engineered Wood Association is a nonprofit trade association focusing on helping the industry create structural wood products of exceptional strength, versatility and reliability . APA’s PS1-95 is an important standard for Construction and Industrial Plywood .

According to PS1-95, the grades of face/back veneers of plywood are classified as the following (*the following is not the full grade description and is only the simple explanation to the grades of plywood face/back veneers) :

Grade N : the premium grade for natural finish; free of open defects ( knotholes, holes, voids and so on ) ; no more than 6 neatly made repairs of wood are allowed .

Grade A : the high grade suitable for painting; free of open defects ( knotholes, holes, voids and so on ) ; no more than 18 neatly made repairs of wood or synthetic patching material are allowed .

Grade B : a few small defects as the following are allowed: minor sanding and patching defects; small worm or borer holes; small splits, neatly made repairs of wood or synthetic patching material; discoloration .

Grade C Plugged : a few normal size (6.4mm by 12.7mm) open defects (such as knotholes, worm or borer holes and so on) are allowed; repairs, patches and discoloration are allowed .

Grade C : a limited number of big size (not exceed 25mm measured across the grain) open defects like knotholes, worm or borer holes are allowed; other defects such as repairs, patches and discoloration are allowed to a limited extent .

Grade D : a limited number of large size (not exceed 65mm across the grain) open defects like knotholes, worm or borer holes are allowed; other defects such as repairs, patches and discoloration are allowed .
